“Fire and Forgiveness” A Mix of a Boy’s Fascination with Fire and Problems That Never Seem to Go Away

My three volume novel is a story about the struggles of Barry Brown, a Catholic boy’s fascination with candles and other sacred objects causing him many problems. It started when he served his first Mass. He had been excited to be an altar boy, but after stealing an altar candle so he could play-act the Mass in his basement, he started a fire. When has parents discovered the burnt candle, they reported the theft to the priest. Barry received a one month suspension after a strong lecture about the sin of stealing. Because of his suspension, he is first bullied then befriended by the leader of a gang of altar boys named Jimmy Staples. Barry thinks he is right to want to get back at the priest for his suspension, but then changes his mind too late to stop Jimmy from carrying it out. After the priest gets sick, both Jimmy and Barry are disciplined. This string of poor choices which follow, make Barry think he needs to dedicate his life to God, and he can best do that by becoming a priest. Even in seminary, Barry continues to have problems. All of them are building up unreleased anger and confusion over why bad things keep happening to him. The book follows his life up until he discovers how to be free of the hurt and find a way to turn his fascination with the sacred into the perfect way for him to find peace and a purpose to his life.
